Ability Shetland
Ability Shetland is a charity which provides direct support to children, families and adults with disabilities and additional support needs. Responding to identified needs, we run groups and clubs and outreach support to individuals.
We help people with disabilities to improve their physical abilities and enhance their personal, social and relationship skills. We aim to ensure that they have equal opportunities and avoid the loneliness and social exclusion, which often results from disability. To achieve these aims, we tackle the challenge of reaching people in all communities, many of whom are in remote, rural and island areas.
As well as the above, Ability Shetland have helped to raise awareness of barriers to inclusion within our community and to address the responsibility everyone has to help remove these. Furthermore, Ability Shetland are very effective ambassadors for inclusion for all across our wider community.
We are a well-established and trusted organisation dedicated to ensuring disabled people can reach their full potential.
Shetland Bereavement Support Service provides a specialist bereavement support service to anyone residing in Shetland who is struggling to cope with their grief. The service is open to adults and children, is confidential and free of charge. One to one support sessions are delivered, by fully trained and experienced support workers.

Shetland Samaritans are volunteers who believe it can be helpful to talk to someone when life is tough. We are based in Linda Rose House, in Charlotte Street, Lerwick and are part of the national Samaritans network. Phones are answered 24/7 and people get in touch with us about a range of reasons. Financial issues, feeling isolated, suffering abuse, feeling suicidal and family problems are some of these. Our vision is that less people will die from suicide but people don’t have to be suicidal to call us. We hope people will call us before they are in crisis. Calls are free, are not traced and with over 20,000 Samaritans across the country, it's very unlikely that a caller would be talking to someone in the Shetland branch.
